Stripes are back - and they're more glamorous than ever
Even for the reassuringly fickle fashion world, the rejection of the recent move towards pared-down classics has been impressively swift. Less than a year after nodding knowingly at grey marl sweaters and a classic blue jean, we’re now gushing platitudes over Alessandro Michele’s new clog-fuelled, multi-hued, Deirdre-Barlow-meets-Iris-Apfel vision for Gucci.
So where does that leave our obsession with the humble, seemingly straightforward stripe?
Breton tops have always been a nifty way of weathering the minimal movement: a covert move to add a shade of interest, an acceptable level of print, a nod to Mods past. Classic with an edge – even Boden-sporting, school-run mums can lay claim to be channelling the sartorial rebel spirit of Jean Seberg or Edie Sedgwick when they’re in a stripy sailor shirt.
But this autumn, stripes are truly coming into their own
